Initially, the majority of the members of the Russian lodges were foreigners — officers in the Russian service and merchants, but soon the number of Russian freemasons by birth began to grow. In the 1750s, a lodge operated in St. Petersburg under the direction of Count R. I. Vorontsov.
The Elaginian alternative Masonic system was the so-called Swedish or Tsinnendorfskaya system, founded by former playing chambermaster of Braunshveigsky court yard P.-B. Reichel. In 1772-1776 Reichel founded several more lodges: Apollo (St. Petersburg), Garpokrat (St. Petersburg), Apollo (Riga), Isis (Revel), Gorusy (St. Petersburg) , Latona (St. Petersburg), Nemesis (St. Petersburg) and Osiris (St. Petersburg - Moscow). In 1776, after negotiations, the Yelaginsky and Reychelevsky lodges united into a single system.
A new stage in the development of Russian Freemasonry is associated with the name of N. I. Novikov, who joined the Freemasons in 1775 in one of the Yelaga lodges. Together with Johann Schwarz, Novikov launched a wide propaganda campaign in Moscow, where the center of activity of Russian Freemasonry shifted. On August 1, 1822, the Masonic lodges were officially closed by the highest rescript of Alexander I.
A new stage in the spread of Freemasonry in Russia dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the so-called “Great East of France” lodges became widespread in Russia - later transformed into the “Great East of the Peoples of Russia”. Freemasonry at the beginning of the 20th century was openly political.
After the October Revolution of 1917, Masonic organizations were banned, Masons were prosecuted by the Cheka-GPU-KVD.
A small number of Russian lodges worked in emigration, primarily in France. Over time, the number of Russian Masons declined, due to the aging of immigrants. During the German occupation of France during World War II, the remaining Russian lodges were closed along with all French lodges.
On June 24, 1995, under the auspices of the Great National Lodge of France, the Grand Lodge of Russia was established and "consecrated", under whose jurisdiction 20 t. workshops (symbolic lodges), constantly accepting new members. The Grand Lodge of Russia was recognized as a regular one, and fraternal ties were established with it: the United Grand Lodge of England; Grand Mother Lodge of Scotland; The Grand Lodge of Ireland; Grand National Lodge of France; United Grand Lodges of Germany; The Grand Lodge of Austria; Grand Lodge of Turkey; The Grand Lodge of New York, about a hundred tons in all. great jurisdictions around the world.
Regular Freemasonry (chronology in modern Russia)
It includes the main branch of world Freemasonry (regular), it is represented by the Great Lodge of Russia.
- 1992 January 14, D. ". L." was established in Moscow. "Harmony" under the auspices of VNLF, the lodge was created from brothers who underwent regularization (GLNF - La Grande Loge Nationale Française, Grand National Lodge of France).
- 1993, in October, the bed of D. ". L." was opened. Lotos in Moscow (VNLF).
- 1993-1995 VNLF creates a box of D. ". L.". "Astraea" in St. Petersburg and D. ". L." "Gamayun" in Voronezh.
- 1995 The VLR (Grand Lodge of Russia) was formed with the participation of the Grand National Lodge of France (VNLF), the VNLF lodges that had been previously opened by it in Russia were included in the VLR.
